This series is a source of overall consumption statistics of energy commodities in all sectors and provides detailed information on production, trade and consumption of electricity, net installed capacity and thermal power plant input and efficiency for selected countries. It provides energy balances for a specific number of developing countries, showing production, trade, conversion and consumption in energy units for all energy products. It also contains electricity profiles for a specific number of countries, providing detailed information on production, trade and consumption of electricity, net installed capacity and thermal power plant input for selected developing and developed countries.

  • Introduction
    The Energy Balances 2012 presents energy data for countries and areas in a format which shows the overall picture of the production, trade, transformation and consumption of energy products utilized in the region, published by the United Nations Statistics Division. Such a format is useful in assessing and analysing supply and consumption patterns across both products and countries in detail on an internationally comparable basis.
  • Concepts and definitions
    Concept of energy balances. The energy balance is an accounting framework for compilation and reconciliation of data on all energy products entering, exiting and used within a country or area during a reference period (in this publication, a year). Such a balance must necessarily express all forms of energy in a common accounting unit, and show the relationship between the inputs to and the outputs from the energy transformation processes. Energy balances should be as complete as possible so that all energy flows are, in principle, accounted for.

  • Conversion factors
    The data which have been supplied by the countries in original units are converted to the common unit, terajoules (TJ), by using standard conversion factors or, in the case of solids, specific factors, where available, as indicated below.
