In addition to the usual review of the recent world food and agriculture situation, each issue of The State of Food and Agriculture from 1957 has included one or more special studies of problems of longer-term interest. This year's edition focuses on the second postwar decade.

Institutional improvements

The importance of institutional obstacles to agricultural development has increasingly been realized during the past decade. Indeed, unsuitable systems of land tenure, inadequate marketing facilities, and the lack of credit ort reasonable terms have come to be recognized as perhaps the key factors holding up agricultural development in the developing countries.
