This trend is growing, as the Web sites of many government ministries, research institutes, consultancies and international organizations show. Industrial performance, productivity, innovativeness, skills, foreign direct investment inflows and the like are constantly compared at varying levels of detail. This concern with comparative industrial performance reflects global competition and the usefulness of comparisons for policy purposes.
