Children, youth and ageing persons

In 1999, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) continued advocacy, alliance-building and other activities to improve the situation of children worldwide and ensure special protection for the most disadvantaged, including victims of war, disasters, extreme poverty and all forms of violence. Based on estimates that about 32,000 children under the age of five continued to die daily from preventable causes, UNICEF programmes gave priority to countries with the highest child mortality rates. The Fund’s activities also continued to focus on achieving the goals established at the 1990 World Summit for Children. In December, the General Assembly established a preparatory committee to outline the agenda and outcome of its high-level special session in 2001 to review progress towards World Summit goals and to consider future action.
