There were 45 highly violent political conflicts in 2013. Most were intra-State conflicts in Asia and Africa. Out of three level-three emergencies in 2013, two were caused by conflict (Syria and the Central African Republic). A direct consequence of intra-State conflicts was a massive increase in the number of refugees and people forcibly displaced because of persecution, violence or human rights violations.
