Protection of human rights

In 2015, the United Nations remained engaged in protecting human rights through its main organs—the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council—and the Human Rights Council, which carried out its task as the central UN intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms worldwide. The Council addressed violations, worked to prevent abuses, provided overall policy guidance, monitored the observance of human rights around the world and assisted States in fulfilling their human rights obligations.
