In 2022, the UNECE region is nowhere near achieving carbon neutrality. The UNECE region produces 39% of global CO2 emissions, has had high emissions historically, and includes countries with the highest level of economic development in the world. Despite positive commitments by countries, the region is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels still account for over 80% of UNECE’s energy supply. Although sustainable energy capacity is growing quickly, the growth rate is insufficient.
