About 60% of Azerbaijan is mountainous, and the rest lowland, mainly steppe and semi-desert. The mountain ranges of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus, and the Talish Mountains surround the Kura-Araz lowland and the Caspian coast. Forest covers 12% and agricultural land – mainly pasture and arable land – makes up 55% of the territory. The remainder, non-agricultural land, includes undeveloped land difficult to use but also land exploited for settlements, roads, and industry.
