Managing competition for water and the pressure on ecosystems

Competition for water exists at all levels and is forecast to increase with demands for water in almost all countries. In 2030, 47% of world population will be living in areas of high water stress.1 Water management around the world is deficient in performance, efficiency and equity. Water use efficiency, pollution mitigation and implementation of environmental measures fall short in most sectors. Access to basic water services – for drinking, sanitation and food production – remains insufficient across developing regions, and more than 5 billion people – 67% of the world population – may still be without access to adequate sanitation in 2030.
