The United Nations Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament is a useful instrument to promote professional expertise in junior multilateral diplomats and assist the substantive development of their disarmament careers. This programme has been implemented successfully for more than 40 years. Since its inception in 1978, it has trained more than 1,000 government officials from 170 Member States. A large number of those Fellows have acquired high-level positions of responsibility within their own Governments or in intergovernmental organizations. Former Fellows have been elected as Heads of two specialized organizations within the United Nations system—the current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) for the period 2005–2013.
