In the 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, the gender-environment nexus has evolved in scope from considering the relationship between “women and the environment”, to grappling with climate change and the dynamics of a climate crisis that threatens to disproportionately impact women’s livelihoods, health outcomes and access to energy. The gender-environment nexus includes women’s rights to land, natural resources and biodiversity; access to food, energy, sanitation and water; sustainable production and consumption; and health and well-being. Evidence shows that climate change has severe adverse impacts on women’s livelihood opportunities, enhances their paid and unpaid workloads, and forces them to undertake high-risk and hazardous activities.
