The commitment of Member States to combat trafficking in persons, especially women and children, was noted from the onset of the negotiation process of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its additional Protocols. The Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children received the required 40 ratifications by 2003, enabling it to enter into force in record time. This reflected the broad consensus that countries must act in concert to address trafficking in persons. The sense of global commitment continued to manifest itself over the years through the steadily growing number of ratifications. At the time of writing, 152 United Nations Member States had ratified the Trafficking in Persons Protocol.
