Accumulated academic knowledge of the management of common-pool resources (CPRs) seems an effective way of bridging the local and global perspectives, even though efforts to deal with this issue are still inadequate. This section will demonstrate the fundamental concept related to the design of local commons in a global context, which contributes to the realization of self-sustaining local and regional societies. First, the history and the present situation in East Kalimantan are described by applying the dynamic framework of cultural ecosystems. Within this context, the importance of constructing “collaborative governance”, or kyouchi, is demonstrated. Then the prototype design guidelines, or kyouchi principles, are outlined, including graduated membership, the commitment principle, and the fair distribution of benefits. The concept of collaborative governance has a theoretical affinity with deliberative democracy, except for the commitment principle, which is highly innovative.
