Foreword

The year 2011 was marked by dramatic events across the Arab world inspired, in part, by the values of democracy, good governance and human rights that are cherished and defended at the United Nations. Described as an “Arab Spring” or “Arab Awakening”, demonstrations in many countries, often with younger generations in the lead, demanded peaceful change.
