The value of exports from the developing economics of the ESCAP region, on average, grew twice as fast as the 7 per cent average growth in the value of world exports dunng the period 1991-1992. That once again reflected the region’s resilience in the current phase of downturn in the industrial countries. There arc a number of factors that have enabled economies of the region to sustain high rates of growth in their exports in the face of recessions in Europe and North America, the traditional markets for their exports. The first of these factors relates to the changing character of exports from the region as well as their destinations.
