Nicaragua continued to experience great difficulties in the process of transition to an economy in which the private sector plays a larger role, a process based largely on a massive influx of external resources. Economic activity continued to be depressed, to the point where output fell by nearly 1%, and investment, which represented only 13% of output, declined again. As in previous years, consumption exceeded the total value of the economy.
