Human rights violations

Alleged violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in a number of countries were examined in 1999 by the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Commission on Human Rights and its Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (formerly the Subcommission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities), as well as by special rapporteurs, special representatives of the Secretary-General and independent experts appointed to examine the allegations. In September, the Commission held a special session to discuss the situation in East Timor.
