Trends from 1990 to 1994

In the first five years of the 1990s (1 990-1994), poverty abated slightly in Latin America in terms of percentage of the population, although the number of poor persons exceeded 200 million in 1994. This percentage decline is attributable to significant reductions from the peak levels recorded in 1990 in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Panama and Peru and advances in Chile and Uruguay where poverty diminished not only from 1990 levels hut also with respect to 1980. The substantial improvements noted in these seven countries were counteracted by increases in poverty in Brazil and Venezuela in the early 1990s, which limited the progress made by the region as a whole.
