Logistics and Transport Competitiveness in Kazakhstan
Improving the competitiveness of Kazakhstan as a transport logistics centre at the crossroads of Europe and Asia could enable the country to unlock significant untapped benefits of growing cargo flows between the two continents. This study identifies the transport infrastructure and services available in Kazakhstan reviews the country’s extensive recent and future transport investments and sets out recommendations to ensure its transport network is ready to harness the growth in inland transport from rising East-West trade particularly in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative within which Kazakhstan could occupy a strategic geographical position. To further capitalize on Kazakhstan’s pivotal role in Euro-Asian transport logistics this study also presents the benefits of adhering to and implementing the full spectrum of UN Transport Conventions and Legal Instruments administered by UNECE and through its continued participation in UNECE initiatives such as the Euro-Asian Transport Links project. The study also highlights strengthening the harmonization of legislation as one of the most important conditions for the development of the transport infrastructure of Kazakhstan and the broader region of which Kazakhstan is a member.

Country Profiles on the Housing Sector
The Country Profile of Kazakhstan prepared at the request of the Government of Kazakhstan focuses on the housing sector specifically on issues of housing provision and affordability management and maintenance of the housing stock energy efficiency in housing housing finance smart sustainable cities and the legal and institutional framework. The Country Profiles on Housing and Land Management are intended to assist governments to improve the performance of their housing urban development and land management sectors and at the same time to promote sustainable development.
Overview of the State of Forests and Forest Management in Kazakhstan
The overview of the State of Forests and Forest Management in Kazakhstan aims to present the forest resources and the forest sector of the country including trends in and pressures on the resource to describe the policies and institutions for the forest sector and to list the major challenges the sector faces and the policy responses in place or planned. The study is a cooperative effort by the author the UNECE/FAO secretariat and national experts done with the use of the best available data. It attempts to cover all dimensions of sustainable forest management.
Environmental Performance Review: Kazakhstan
The third Environmental Performance Review of Kazakhstan examines progress made by the country in the management of its environment since 2012. It covers legal and policy frameworks greening the economy environmental monitoring and public participation and education for sustainable development. The EPR addresses issues of specific importance to the country related to air protection biodiversity and protected areas as well as water waste and chemicals management industry agriculture energy and health. It also examines the efforts of Kazakhstan to integrate environmental considerations into its policies in the transport energy and industry sectors. The review further provides a substantive and policy analysis of the country’s climate change adaptation and mitigation measures and its participation in international mechanisms. The publication is aimed at officials and experts working for public authorities responsible for environmental policy representatives of civil society the business community academia and the media. The Environmental Performance Review (EPR) Programme is an important instrument for countries with economies in transition. Third-cycle EPRs focus on environmental governance and financing in a green economy context countries’ cooperation with the international community and environmental mainstreaming in priority sectors. Through the peer review process EPRs also promote dialogue among ECE member countries and harmonization of environmental conditions and policies throughout the region.
Environmental Performance Reviews: Kazakhstan
The focus of the ECE review programme is to help countries in transition to improve their individual and collective performance in environmental management. The ultimate goal is the promotion of sustainable development and the convergence of environmental conditions and policies throughout Europe. This review presents a detailed study on Kazakhstan’s environmental position and examines: the framework for environmental policy and management; the management of pollution and natural resources; and the economic and sectoral integration.
