This publication was conceived in 1948 as a collection of international awards or decisions rendered between States including cases involving espousing or respondent Governments on behalf of individual claimants. The present volume reproduces the awards in two arbitrations namely the case between the Republic of Ecuador and the United States of America and the Railway Land Arbitration between Malaysia and Singapore respectively. It also reproduces the outcome of the Timor Sea Conciliation involving Timor-Leste and Australia.

International arbitral and judicial awards are of considerable importance for they are a "subsidiary means for the determination of the rules of law" as provided in Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice. It was decided to limit the collection strictly to international decisions i.e. those rendered between States and between States and international organizations. The first volume of RIAA was prepared in 1948. Forthcoming volumes of the publication will be devoted to a collection of international decisions rendered from the late eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. In order to preserve the accuracy of the awards the historical names of the Parties at the time of the awards have been retained.

The present volume is made up on four cases namely the report and recommendations to the governments of Iceland and Norway of the Conciliation Commission of the Continental Shelf areas between Iceland and Jan Mayen the award in the case of the Iron Rhine railway between Belgium and the Netherlands and the interpretation thereof the Tribunal; the award and the settlement agreement of the Parties annexed thereto in the dispute concerning the Straits of Johor between Malaysia and Singapore; and the award ion the case concerning the delimitation of the maritime boundary between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

The present volume is devoted entirely to a single case The United States – United Kingdom Arbitration concerning Heathrow Airport User Charges decided by the Tribunal constituted pursuant to the air services Agreement of 23 July 1977 as subsequently amended between the United Kingdom and the United States. This is a bilingual publication in English and French.
