Information and communication technologies support development. When that development is eff ective, efficient and enduring it is called sustainable. E-government impacts directly on sustainable development through the use of ICT in public sector social and economic development programmes. In this context, the emerging imperative today is to rethink e-government development in order to understand how the opportunities offered by new technologies promote development for the people and with their integral participation. There is a need to assess how and to what extent governments of the world are employing e-government, which furthers greater efficacy and eff ectiveness for sustainability in this specific and peoplefocused sense.
