Study on the Application of Confidence-Building Measures in Outer Space

image of Study on the Application of Confidence-Building Measures in Outer Space

With about 300 operational satellites in orbit and more than half of them on military missions, the Members States are advocating greater transparency and confidence-building measures to prevent an arms race in outer space. This study considers the current uses of outer space and emerging trends with special emphasis on the technical problems involved. Global and bilateral agreements concerning both military and peaceful aspects of outer space are also dealt with. Most importantly, it covers the over-all question of confidence-building and the political, legal, technological and scientific considerations of its implementation.
