Special session of the General Assembly devoted to disarmament

The idea of a special session of the General Assembly devoted to disarmament was initially advanced at the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries, held at Belgrade in 1961. The Declaration which emerged from that Conference reconimended, inter alia, that the General Assembly of the United Nations should, at its forthcoming session, adopt a decision on the convening either of a special session of the General Assembly of the United Nations devoted to discussion of disarmament or on the convening of a world disarmament conference under the auspices of the United Nations with a view to setting in motion the process of general disarmament.
