It summarizes developments and trends in 1985 on key issues of multilateral consideration at the international and regional levels. Reviews the activity of the fortieth session of the General Assembly, the Conference on Disarmament and the Disarmament Commission. Contains a timeline that highlights events in multilateral disarmament in 1985.

Activities of the United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization related to disarmament

During 1985, in the framework of its programme “Research into the causes and consequences of the arms race and creation of conditions conducive to peace” (22 C/5 approved subprogramme XIII. 1.2), UNESCO commissioned the following studies: (a) Adeniji, Olu (Nigeria): “From the concept of general and complete disarmament to the comprehensive programme of disarmament”; (b) Deshingar, Giri (India): “Society through disarmament as a factor of the new international economic order”; (c) International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO): “The impact of the arms race on education, science and technology, culture and commnunication”; (d) Lock, Peter (Federal Republic of Germany): “The socio-economic dimensions of the concept of security through disarmament in the context of European countries” ; (e) Nnoli, O. (Nigeria): “Significance and consequences of the concept of security through disarmament in the countries of southern Africa faced with the armament policy of South Africa”; (f) Saxe-Femandez, John (Mexico): “The analysis of the concept of security through disarmament in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean countries: a survey of the literature”; and (g) Väyrynen, Raimo (Finland): “Theories of security and disarmament: a critical appraisal”
