Disarmament and development

The need to reduce to a minimum the diversion of human and economic resources for armaments and to develop such resources for the welfare of all peoples was expressly recognized by the General Assembly in the adoption of resolution 380 (V) of 1950. Since that time, the United Nations has undertaken a number of studies on the relationship between those two major issues and on related questions, and Member States have submitted proposals to institutionalize that relationship, for instance, through the establishment of a fund or the creation of alternative mechanisms for channelling resources released through disarmament; however, to date none of those proposals has been implemented.
