The volume 14 compiles the disarmament resolutions and decisions of the forty-fourth session of the General Assembly, the voting patterns in the General Assembly and the First Committee report and dates of their adoption. It summarizes developments and trends in 1989 on key issues of multilateral consideration at the international and regional levels.

Conventional weapons

The issue of the reduction of conventional armaments and armed forces was addressed by the General Assembly in the course of its earliest sessions. It is, however, the question of nuclear disarmament that has traditionally dominated United Nations disarmament efforts, inasmuch as it is nuclear weapons that pose the threat of the annihilation of civilization.
