1945

Since the beginning of the space age in 1957, matters related to outer space have been pursued in international forums along two separate lines: those related to peaceful application of space technology and those related to the prevention of an arms race in that environment. These issues have been discussed by States Members of the United Nations, particularly in the General Assembly, in the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its subsidiary bodies, and in the Conference on Disarmament. The discussions have contributed to the conclusion of a number of international agreements concerning both peaceful and military aspects of the use of outer space.
