Global military expenditure, after increasing consistently since 1998, reached more than $1.5 trillion in 2010.1 Though the growth rate was much slower in 2009, military expenditure had increased worldwide by 50 per cent since 2001, with the top 10 spending countries accounting for about 68 per cent of the world total during that period.
