The UN Seminar on “Implementing the UNSC Resolution 1540 (2004) in Latin America and the Caribbean” was aimed at raising awareness about the obligations and requirements of the Resolutions 1540 and 1673 (2006) and at increasing and facilitating cooperation and assistance in implementing them at the national and regional levels.

Guatemala: Experience and current activities

Through inter-institutional consultations, Guatemala has taken a series of steps to identify administrative and legislative needs, which facilitated in drafting a bill that provides drastic sanctions for all acts of terrorism. Included is a set of norms for preventing terrorist acts and maintaining strict security controls through the creation of a National Counter-Terrorism Security Council, to prevent and control terrorism. Moreover, an Inter-institutional Committee can be convened whenever there is a need for coordination to comply with international commitments.
