The Doomsday Clock first appeared on the cover of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in June 1947 to warn the public about the dangers of atomic weapons and the potential catastrophe of future wars. The Bulletin editors called for international control of nuclear materials and technologies and, since then, authors have written about the connections between nuclear weapons and the need for general and complete disarmament to protect humanity from the ravages of war.
