The experience of Japan

Past economic growth and present economic conditions in Japan are in many respects sufficiently different from the other countries of the region to require separate treatment. Japan’s economy reached the stage of self-sustaining growth in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and its economy, after a further half century of rapid industrial growth, now provides a strong contrast to those of most other countries in the region.
