The year 1965 marked the twentieth anniversary of the armistice ending the Second World War and the mid-way of the United Nations Development Decade. In this period, the developing ECAFE countries were occupied with the problem of adjusting their political and social framework in order to make it more compatible with the requirements of rapid economic development which continues to be the major objective of the Governments. More direct efforts were also made by means of appropriate economic policies to accelerate the rate of economic growth and thus to improve per capita income and level of living. This chapter therefore seeks to review briefly the major economic development trends-in the region and in individual countries to the extent that the relevant data are available.
