This latest edition of the Survey analyzes current economic and social developments in the region against the background of events in the world economy. It also focuses on the serios problems of growth and transformation of the area's least developed and Pacific Island developing economies.

Economic performance of the developing ESCAP economies

A dominant policy concern of most developing ESCAP countries in 1980-1981 was that of dealing with the domestic inflation which the escalation of oil import prices in 1979-1980 had brought in its train. Some countries of the region succeeded in handling this problem with reasonable success, but others, especially the poorest and least developed, found them selves bearing a heavy burden as a consequence of their limited adjustment capacity.
