This Survey analyzes recent economic and social developments in the region with particular emphasis on economic and social policy issues and broad development strategies. An essential resource for every multinational corporation intending to expand their business in Asia or to invest in the region.

For many years, the ESCAP region received nearly universal acclaim as the fastest-growing region in the world. However, in the second half of 1997, some of its most dynamic economies faced unprecedented economic turmoil, manifested most visibly in the drastic depreciation of exchange rates and the dramatic fall in stock indices. As a result, economic growth in the region, which had already recorded a decline in 1997, is expected to decelerate substantially during the current year.
