In addition to dealing with core issues such as children and the family, this publication shows trends in the early 1990s in important facets of social development such as poverty, income distribution, employment, social expenditure, education and pay levels. The analysis is complemented by numerous statistical tables.

Unemployment and underemployment in terms of hours worked

During the five years from 1990 to 1994, the utilization of the urban labour force improved in the majority of the countries of the region, with reductions being registered both in unemployment and in underemployment in terms of the number of hours worked. The hiatus in growth experienced by a number of countries and the resulting increase in urban unemployment seen during the last two years have reversed this positive trend, however.
