The Statistical Yearbook is an annual compilation of a wide range of international economic, social and environmental statistics on over 200 countries and areas, compiled from sources including UN agencies and other international, national and specialized organizations. The 50th issue contains data available to the Statistics Division as of March 2006 and presents them in 76 tables. The number of years of data shown in the tables varies from one to ten, with the ten-year tables covering 1994 to 2003 or 1995 to 2004. Introduction (English)

This is the fiftieth issue of the United Nations Statistical Yearbook, prepared by the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. When such milestones are reached, often the natural tendency is to look ahead by looking back and to make a retrospective assessment of the event or product being commemorated. The United Nations Statistics Division feels a sense of pride in drawing the readers’ attention to the fact that this compendium has been updated and released for publication consistently fifty times so far. This is an opportunity to take stock of the Statistical Yearbook’s success in providing an overall portrait of the evolving socio-economic situation of the world and to appraise how well it has stood the test of time as a useful vehicle which summarizes, in a comprehensive and convenient way, a great variety of important international statistics. At the same time, a reflection is warranted as to how to meet the challenges that lie ahead for the global statistical system, and for such a print publication in this electronic era.
