Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean 2012

The Yearbook comprises four chapters. The first covers demographic and social indicators, reflecting special efforts to mainstream the gender perspective in statistical information. The second chapter presents economic statistics relating to trade, balance-of-payments and prices, as well as national accounts. The third chapter provides the quantitative information available on the environment. Given the abundance of different, sometimes conflicting, data now accessible to researchers through the Internet, special attention must be paid to the data sheets on which the source of the data, their definition and coverage are specified. This information is presented in the fourth chapter, supplementing the more specific information contained in the footnotes to each of the tables of this Yearbook.

Social statistics

This chapter offers social statistics prepared by ECLAC and by specialized international agencies, deriving mainly from household censuses and, to a lesser extent, from population and housing censuses and administrative records. The statistics are grouped into seven subject areas: population, labour, education, health, housing and basic services, poverty, income distribution and gender. These subject areas correspond to some of the main divisions of policy functions commonly assigned to different national ministries (labour, education, health, housing) as well as to spheres of intersectoral policy (population, poverty, income distribution and gender). To the extent possible, the indicators have been disaggregated according to different dimensions such as sex, age group, geographical area and income level, to highlight the socioeconomic inequalities that characterize the region.
