Uneven international trade performance

International trade in 1984 provided countries with diverse and uneven export opportunities. The major beneficiaries of the surge in trade were largely those countries in which manufactures provided a major share of export earnings and those with strong trade ties to the more rapidly growing markets. At the same time, international commodity prices saw their cyclical recovery cut short in 1984, while the surge in exports in a number of sensitive sectors brought about a stiffening of protectionist barriers.
