Second Review

image of Environmental Performance Reviews: Albania

The present publication takes stock of the progress made by Albania in the management of its environment since the country was first reviewed in 2002. It assesses the implementation of the recommendations contained in the first review. This second Environmental Performance Reviews also covers 10 issues of importance to Albania related to policymaking, planning and implementation, the financing of environmental policies and projects and the integration of environmental concerns into economic sectors, in particular the sustainable management of water resources, waste management, forestry, biodiversity and protected areas, energy and environment, and environmental health.

Forestry, biodiversity and protected areas

Since the first EPR, national legislation related to forestry, biological diversity and protected areas has been improved. Currently, the most important national policy development related to forestry and forest management is the transfer of ownership, rights to use and responsibilities for the management of what is ultimately planned to be 60 per cent of Albania’s forests and pastures to local communes.
