Azerbaijan, the largest of the three republics of the South Caucasus, occupies the southern part of the isthmus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The country has a total land area of 86,600 km2 and it is bordered by the Russian Federation to the north, the Caspian Sea to the east, the Islamic Republic of Iran to the south, Armenia to the west, Georgia to the north-west and Turkey to the south-west. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan is separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by a strip of Armenian territory. The national frontier is 2013 km long.
