European union

The European Union (EU) and its constituent bodies is a supranational organization consisting of 27 member States. It was established in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome but its roots predate that and can be traced to the European Coal and Steel Community founded in 1951. There are three main bodies that run the EU and adopt its legislation. These are the European Parliament (representing the people of Europe), the Council of the European Union (representing national governments), and the European Commission (representing the common EU interest).
