World Public Sector Report
The World Public Sector Report, one of UNDESA’s Flagship Reports, aims to capture the emerging issues, concerns and innovations in governance and public administration, especially those that contribute to the realization of the UN Development Agenda including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The World Public Sector Report is intended for policy makers, practitioners and civil society, particularly in developing countries and transition economies.

World Public Sector Report 2023
This report examines the role that national institutional and governance innovations and changes that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic can play in advancing progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The consequences of the pandemic threaten to derail progress and make the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more difficult to achieve. Yet the pandemic also sparked rapid innovation in government institutions and public administration that could be capitalized on. Against this backdrop the report focuses on how governments can reshape their relationship with people and other actors to enhance trust and promote the changes required for more sustainable and peaceful societies. How they can assess competing priorities and address difficult policy trade-offs that have emerged since 2020. And what assets and innovations they can mobilize to transform the public sector and achieve the SDGs.
World Public Sector Report 2021
Five years after the start of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) governance issues remain at the forefront. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted even more the importance of national institutions for the achievement of the SDGs. The World Public Sector Report 2021 focuses on three dimensions of institutional change at the national level. First it documents changes in institutional arrangements for SDG implementation since 2015. Second it assesses the development performance strengths and weaknesses of follow-up and review systems for the SDGs. Third it examines efforts made by governments and other stakeholders to enhance the capacity of public servants to implement the SDGs. Based on in-depth examination of institutional arrangements for SDG implementation in a sample of 24 countries in all regions the report aims to draw attention to the institutional dimension of SDG implementation and provide lessons for national policymakers in this regard. The report also takes stock of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on national institutions and their implications for delivering on the 2030 Agenda. The e-book for this publication has been converted into an accessible format for the visually impaired and people with print reading disabilities. It is fully compatible with leading screen-reader technologies such as JAWS and NVDA.

This report examines how the public sector can foster integrated approaches to implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It examines challenges and opportunities for integrated approaches highlighting past experiences. It examines how governments across the world have chosen to address existing interlinkages among the SDGs and their implications for public institutions. It aims to produce a comprehensive empirical analysis of policy integration for the SDGs at the national level with a view to drawing lessons on how emerging initiatives aiming to policy and institutional integration might lead to success in achieving the SDGs in different contexts. Concrete examples are given.

World Public Sector Report 2010
The main objective of the 2010 World Public Sector Report is to analyze challenges strategies and practices in rebuilding public administration after conflict. It is unique in that it provides key lessons learned about transforming governments to promote peaceful coexistence sustainable development and prosperity for all citizens. The report is based on a literature review of the main theories and issues involved in post-conflict reconstruction coupled with an analysis of relevant case studies and good practices from all five regions of the world dating from the end of World War II to the present. This publication examines four main key areas of public administration reconstruction: institution-building leadership human resources in the public sector citizen engagement and public service delivery. The report is intended for decision makers in conflict or conflict-prone situations and a range of different actors.

The World Public Sector Report one of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Flagship Reports aims to capture the emerging issues concerns and innovations in governance and public administration. The 2008 World Public Sector Report People Matter: Civic Engagement in Public Governance highlights the importance of civic engagement in public governance and by profiling several case studies demonstrates how such practices gain the capacity to strengthen governance make it more transparent and accountable and most importantly contribute to developmental outcomes that are more sustainable equitable and just.
World Public Sector Report 2005
The conditions of globalization including economic integration fiscal discipline introduction of information communications technologies and democratic governance have increasingly forced states to redefine their role in public management and to reform the public administration system. However there is growing realization amongst decision makers that policy and institutional reform per se will not be sufficient to revitalize the public sector. Major strengthening of the knowledge skills values attitudes and leadership abilities of human capital is also needed to transform the public sector particularly in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This year’s Report is expected to contribute to global and national debates on this important topic.
World Public Sector Report 2003
The World Public Sector Report 2003 provides an analysis of the status of e-government in the world today. It adopts the UN Millennium Declaration as its analytical framework and presents global ranking of Member States as to their e-government readiness. The main message of the Report is that development and the existence of e-government applications do not necessarily reflect the quality of life in a country. However treating e-government as a tool that facilitates creation of public value by public administration can positively impact human development.
World Public Sector Report 2001
It is increasingly being acknowledged that the State is a key actor in the development process. It has a major role to play in making globalization work for all; in alleviating poverty and income inequality; in advancing human rights and democracy; in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development; and in managing violent conflict and combating international crime. This new report will be published every two years and intends to review major trends and issues concerning public administration and governance. It will analyze the challenges faced by governments in reforming particular areas of their public sector and highlight best practices in public administration and/or national reforms which may serve as a useful reference to other countries modernizing their public administration systems. This publication will provide policy makers scholars and the civil society with relevant information data and research findings on issues related to the public sector.
