As was already mentioned in the Introduction to this Survey, Latin America’s gross domestic product rose much less in 1959 than in 1958, but since the rate of increase (2.9 per cent) was calculated on the basis of preliminary and incomplete data, further revisions could change this figure substantially. However, the high rate of population increase in Latin America detracts considerably from the significance of this improvement in the total product and emphasizes how serious the progressive deterioration in the growth rate of the gross product has been in recent years.
