The equidistant line is defined in article 12 of the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone and article 15 of the 1982 Convention as "the line every point of which is equidistant from the coastlines from which the breadth of the territorial sea of each two States is measured". The 1958 Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf contains a similar definition, which differentiates between States with adjacent coasts and States with opposite coasts, for which it uses the term "median line" although, technically speaking, such a line is also an equidistant line
