International peace and security

Peacekeeping, peacebuilding, economic recovery in post-conflict countries and counter-terrorism strategies were among the key challenges addressed by the United Nations in 2010. During the year, the Security Council issued statements on the transition and exit strategies of peacekeeping operations, postconflict peacebuilding, preventive diplomacy—especially in Africa—threats to peace caused by terrorist acts and protection of civilians in armed conflict. In October, the Council adopted a resolution welcoming the review of the UN peacebuilding architecture and requested all relevant United Nations actors to take forward the recommendations of the related report and improve the Peacebuilding Commission’s effectiveness. Among other issues, the Council discussed its own role in maintaining international peace and security.
