Many aspects of the publishing and printing industries are governed by contractual arrangements between the interested parties. This guide seeks to provide a range of model agreements with explanatory notes to cover the relationships between key players in this area. It does not seek to create new trade usages but aims at reflecting current practices. The contracts contained in this guide are drawn from a variety of contracts in use in the book trade and have been adapted for use by the publishing and printing industries. They can be used in countries whose legal systems are based on either common law or civil law. The only important exception is to be found in the first contract (author–publisher), which is closer in presentation and content to that used in common law countries. A model of a contract closer to that used in civil law countries can be found in the French version of this publication. Every effort has been made to narrow the gap between the two versions.
