What is product certification? How is it different from quality system certification?

Product certification, the most common type of third-party conformity assessment, is defined as a ‘procedure by which a third party gives written assurance that a product, process or service conforms to specified requirements’. Product certification involves the issue of a certificate or mark (or both) to demonstrate that a specific product meets a defined set of requirements for that product, usually specified in a standard. The product certification mark is normally found on the product or its packaging and may also appear on a certificate issued by the product certification body. The mark carries a reference to the number or name of the relevant product standard against which the product has been certified.
