What are the intellectual property issues involved in choosing and registering domain names?

Domain names are Internet addresses, and are commonly used to identify and find websites. For example, the domain name ‘wipo.int’ is used to locate the WIPO website at www.wipo.int. Over time, domain names have come to constitute business identifiers, thereby coming into conflict with trademarks. It is important, therefore, to pick a domain name that is not the trademark of another company, or a well-known mark.
