This year’s report focuses on regional trade, the most common form of trade for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It contains 50 country profiles, featuring detailed SME competitiveness assessments and information on each country’s export potential within and outside their geographical region. Success stories of value chain integration are provided for Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Kenya and Morocco. The report provides targeted advice for policymakers, businesses, and trade and investment support institutions, and combines data analysis, case studies, academic insights and opinions by thought leaders.

The SME Competitiveness Outlook 2017 was prepared by a team led by Marion Jansen and under the general supervision of Aicha Pouye. Olga Solleder coordinated the report. The team members in the Chief Economist and Export Strategies Section included Mauro Boffa, Madhubashini Fernando, Mario Filadoro, Loe Franssen and Sebastian Klotz. Contributions were received from Hiba Batool, José Cobián Álvarez, Justine Lan, Alexandre Lauwers, Antonina Popova, Valentina Rollo, Jimena Ayelen Sotelo, Jasmeer Virdee and Quan Zhao. Rosa Alba Ruffo, under the supervision of Zoritsa Urosevic, and colleagues from the United Nations World Tourism Organization provided content related to tourism.
