Despite the progress made in recent years, persons with disabilities over the world continue to face numerous barriers to their full inclusion and participation in the life of their communities. In order to help address this challenge, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General, in coordination with all relevant United Nations entities, “to compile and analyse national policies, programmes, best practices and available statistics regarding persons with disabilities, reflecting progress made in addressing the relevant internationally agreed development goals and the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), to be submitted to the General Assembly in a flagship report during 2018”. The UN flagship report, Disability and Development Report — Realizing the SDGs by, for and with persons with disabilities, 2018, comes at a critical time. It is a first stocktaking of where we stand on key aspects of mainstreaming disability globally in light of the 2030 Agenda. This stocktaking is crucial to identify what is needed to monitor progress made for persons with disabilities in society and development and to provide wide-ranging recommendations for transformative change. Ultimately, the report builds on the 2030 Agenda, together with the CRPD, to offer a road map towards a more inclusive and sustainable world.
